THOU - The Archer & The Owle

Hank Can never really go wrong with Thou--they've established themselves as a band that consistently puts out high quality releases. Also, there are very few bands that I would trust with Nirvana's material, but these dudes do a killer job on the Something in the Way cover. Fantastic juxtaposition of blackened growls and tender vocals. Favorite track: Something In The Way.

xhrl_ When a band takes care to do their craft well, I enjoy supporting them. Such is my experience with Thou. I have yet to find a really bad creative offering from them. Great blackened sludgy doomy metal that is philosophical and thought-provoking. The blackened Nirvana cover of "Something In the Way" is worth buying this LP by itself. Love the mixture of black and clean vocals. A must-hear for a Thou fan or a fan of old grunge. SUPERB. Favorite track: Something In The Way.

Wil Wright Thick sounds, slow riffs, very satisfying doom. Favorite track: Something In The Way.

The death throes of daylight set the sky ablaze. Silent pyres are heaped with the bodies of the meek. A twilight inferno: prelude to utter blackness, the Erlking's only boon. In the shadow which offers no relief we explore the caverns of thought and pluck stars from the sky, striving. But armour wrought from rhetoric and axes blunt by willful ignorance offer no protection--only shackles and an early demise. Excise guilt. Abolish doubt. Is there no escape from Ahimsa's snare? Natures face be stained red by claw and tooth. But even rusty tools--misshapen and vile--have their uses. There can be no life for the weak.
Heads shake at self inflicted misfortune. Hands wrung of responsibility. Ears covered from the ringing trumpets of fact. Father created from the black froth swept off the rim of the cauldron of creation. We are maggots, and we are worms writhing in the marshes of refuse. Flee! Flee! Sink to hands and knees. Crawl through the muck, shrunken genitalia beating against bellies and thighs. Wretched, disgusting beasts. That tree which no man knows has been hewn to it's roots and set ablaze. Our faces are bleached in its ashes.
Cold World 05:45
It's a cold world to walk alone in. You need some side to start belonging. There's always open arms in the war. The out crowd is laughing at you. A man with a badge appears, saying, "It's warm. Come inside." Kid, you got no real agendas. All the good you've done been's forgotten. There's always open arms in the war.
There There 04:32
All as if you were alone. Nobody left you, but you're always not better. It's unmistakable. I'm only here for understanding. You better. Hey, there there. You're not the least of us. Don't look at me like a defect. I'm just unlearning. Don't worry. Hey, there there. When in the sharpest hole, look for the rope that isn't burning: start climbing.

Recorded throughout the turn of the decade, THOU deliver another potent 40 minutes of triumphant doom-laden sludge fury. Atypical heavyness to say the least, the ultra-crushing sound THOU has become known for is subtly enhanced by unique elements ala piano, atmospheric noise, horns, double bass and several re-envisioned cover songs for keen ears to decipher. Along with otherwise unreleased "Summit"-era material, this lengthy EP contains THOU's original half of the now postponed split release with PYGMY LUSH, oddly inspiring the band to then cover two tracks by their collaborators' latest work. Its all spice added to the overall stunning effect of a truly visionary band; intelligent commentary atop six massive tracks of absolutely bludgeoning music. Comes on color vinyl housed in a beautiful spot-glossed "tip-on" classic style gatefold LP jacket, this is yet another brick in THOU's ever-strengthening wall of spite and menace.
